Stray Trek - On the Paths of Motion, Light and Shadow

An exhibition of contemporary art for children and young people

Rauma Art Museum 12 January - 22 February 2009

Produced by the Rauma Art Museum, Stray Trek continues the museum's series of contemporary art exhibitions designed for children and young people. The works in these exhibitions are not expressly created for children, but the choice of works, the exhibition concept and exhibition tour are all designed with the target group in mind.

The starting point of Stay Trek is experience and spatiality - reflections, apparitions, light, shadow, motion and strange perspectives. The exhibition invites the audience on an adventure, to marvel at things and experience the works. Things are not what they seem, and the works on show incorporate exciting and fascinating elements. The show presents work by eight topical Finnish contemporary artists: Petri Eskelinen, Jari Haanperä, Terike Haapoja, Hanna Haaslahti, Helena Hietanen & Jaakko Niemelä, Anssi Kasitonni and Atte Uotila.

Rauma Art Museum has been producing exhibitions of contemporary art for children since 2002. Entitled Really Neat, the theme of the 2008 exhibition was cleaning, hygiene and the environment. In 2007 the museum was taken over by works on the theme of dogs under the title I Would Like To Be A Dog. Exhibition themes in 2002-2007 revolved around the five senses.

This year, the children's show has a larger intended audience than before. From Rauma, Stray Trek will go on a tour to Berlin, where it will be presented in Felleshus, the exhibition space of the Nordic Embassies which hosts one exhibition of Finnish culture every year. The exhibition will be open from 6 March to 30 April 2009 at Felleshus, Nordic Embassies, Rauchstrasse 1, D-10787, Berlin.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a 'tourist map' designed for the target group, comprising an exhibition brochure and a textbook with fun assignments, as well as information about the exhibition and the individual works on show. The graphic designer of Stray Trek is Atte Uotila, who also participates in the exhibition as a sculptor. This year the exhibition workshops will be held later in the spring. Information about them will be available at the museum website www.raumantaidemuseo.fi.
