Ars Rauma 2011

Works of Art from the Vexi Salmi Collection
Rauma Art Museum 7th of May – 11th of September

Vexi Salmi, a well-known master of lyrics and a “handyman of music”, is also a passionate collector of and spokesman for contemporary art. He acquires art, follows exhibitions and many Finnish artists belong to the circle of his closest friends. Just Life –exhibition shows approximately 150 works, paintings, graphics, drawings and sculptures. Alongside the exhibition one can listen to music that Vexi Salmi has written the lyrics for. In addition there is an audio tour and an interview video where Vexi talks about his relationship to visual arts and collecting art.

Art-works in the Just Life –exhibition represent the more expressive and picturesque part of Vexi Salmi’s collection. Many works portray people, from close and vulnerable in essence. There are also portraits of people who are close to Vexi, from fields of both music and art. The landscapes in the collection often have several meanings; they can be seen as atmospheres or states of mind. One part of the collection has a connection to music and the works picture experiencing music in painted rhythms and compositions. Vexi has also been interested in areas linked to death. Darker shades of melancholy create a contrast to playfulness and the joy of life.
