Rauma Art Museum Nov. 28, 2015 - Feb. 28, 2016

This latest exhibition by artist couple Merja Puustinen and Andy Best brings together a selection of brand new and older works that relate to the current social and political climate. As usual, Best and Puustinen’s works at first appear playful and sometimes childish, but under the surface lurks something darker and more sinister. Religious myths and iconography are woven together with playful, garish colours and forms, creating landscapes for the mind to explore. Children happily jump on inflatable sculptures. Toy planes echo the ever present surveillance of the military-industrial state. Physical audience action and participation is a vital part of the exhibition – playing together on the bouncy castle sculptures, and creating part of the collective wall painting.

Puustinen is an artistic and cultural/political researcher and doctoral candidate at Kuvataideakatemia, The University of the Arts, Helsinki. Best is a sculpture lecturer at Aalto University.

Farewell to Summer House 5.10.2013 - 12.1.2014

Rauma harbour is expanding and summer houses of the island Iso-Saukko, in Rauma archipelago, are also threatened. In the island of Iso-Saukko is situated the old summer house of well-known Rauma based writer and expert of Rauma language, Tauno Koskela (1916-2002). Päivi Granö had possibility to experience the atmosphere of the summer house during one year. She created an exhibition of memories related to Iso-Saukko's villa and environment. Exhibition consists also materials from Koskela family's earlier summer house in Petäjäs area near Rauma harbour. There spent some times also Tauno's older brother poet Unto Koskela (1908-1934).
