Valtonen inherited some artworks and financial resources for further collecting from his uncle Alfred Kordelin (1868–1917). Eino Valtonen was born in Rauma. He studied law at the Helsinki University, but his studies were interrupted when the Finnish civil war broke out in 1918. Valtonen had a career as an officer in the Finnish Navy. He was one of the pioneers of the scout movement in Finland, eager sportsman and sailor and actively interested in art and music. He died at the age of 35 as the first officer of the torpedo boat S2 when the vessel went down in a storm at the southern Bay of Bothnia.
In the collection there are works by Elin Danielson-Gambogi, Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Pekka Halonen, Eero Järnefelt, Hjalmar Munsterhjelm, Jalmari Ruokokoski and Victor Westerholm.
