| Tutkimuslautan Vihreään-laboratoriossa puiden runkoja ja lehvästöjä tutkitaan erityisesti kehitetyllä Latvapudotuslaitteella (Tree-Top Drop – TTD). TTD on tuntoaistiin perustuva puun latvukseen laskettava instrumentti ja paikkasidonnainen installaatio, jota käytetään puiden runkojen ja latvusten sisällä piilevän monimuotoisuuden tutkimiseksi urbaanissa ja maaseutuympäristössä etsittäessä tuntematonta mikrotason luontotyypin elämää, jota ei paljain silmin voi havaita. Minkälaista tuntematonta mielikuvituksellista biodiversiteettiä voidaan löytää vihreän lehvästön alta? Mitä teolliseen ympäristöön sopeutumisen muotoja on kehittynyt näissä urbaaneissa piilopaikoissa? Tähänastiset kokeet osoittavat 4000–5000 alle millimetrin kokoisen olennon vuosittaista keskittymää neliömetriä kohti (metsän maapohjassa). Kun tähän lisätään aikaisemmin havaitsemattomien pienimpien elämänmuotojen määrä, saadaan miljardien (1012) suuruinen luku. Tätä voidaan nykyään tutkia tarkkaan FFUR:n ”keijunhaku ”-teknologialla. Residenssini aikana Porto Alegressa Brasiliassa vuonna 2006 tutkimukseni suuntautuivat useille eri aloille. Kehitin välineitä ja prototyyppejä, jotka mahdollistavat puiden sisuksen tutkimisen – vihreään, tämän rikkaan maan diversiteettiin. FFUR suoritti useita kenttäkokeita paikanpäällä ja tutki erilaisia puita. Eräs tällainen oli julkinen ”bambuskannaus”, jolla etsittiin tuntemattomia elämänmuotoja bambussa. Etsinnässä oli esim. Saci Pererê, joka on perustellusti brasilialaisen mytologian suosituin hahmo. Saci Pererê on yksijalkainen keiju, jolla on reiät kämmenpohjissaan. In the Into the Green Laboratory of the Research Raft
tree trunks and crowns are studied with a specially
developed Tree-TopDrop (TTD). The TTD is a tactile
and immersive instrument and site-specific installation
for the investigation of the hidden variety inside
tree trunks and crowns in urban and rural areas in the
search for unknown and micro biotope life invisible to
the naked eye. What kind of unknown fantastic biodiversity
and habitats can we find under the umbrella
of the green clouds? Which adaptations and forms
of industrial nature have developed in these urban
refuges? Experiments to date show a concentration
of creatures smaller than 1mm of 4000 to 5000 per
square meter per year (forest floor). If this is added to
the number of smallest life forms previously undetected
we arrive at a figure in the billions (1012). This can
now be accurately researched with the “elf-hit” technology
from the FFUR.
During my residency in Porto Alegre, Brazil in
2006, my research focus took several search paths.
I developed tools and prototypes which enable the
investigation of the inside of trees – into the green,
into diversity of this rich country. The FFUR undertook
several field tests on location and investigated
different types of trees. Such as the public Bamboo
Scan, in the search for unknown life forms inside bamboo
e.g. Saci Pererê - who is arguably the most popular
character in Brazilian mythology. Saci Pererê is a
one-legged elf with holes in the palms of his hands,
who smokes a pipe and wears a magical red cap that
enables him to disappear and reappear wherever he
wishes.
