| Jukka Lehtisen ja Marko Suomen teokseen Kaunistuksen kanahäkki kuuluu perinteinen pihanperän kana-aitaus suojarakennelmineen, munintapaikkoineen ja orsineen. Kanalan kesäasukkaiksi on saapunut viisi kanaa ja kukko. Kanat ovat peräisin tehotuotantoon erikoistuneesta häkkikanalasta ja päässeet viettämään vapaampia eläkepäiviä osaksi taideteosta. ”Kaunistuksen kanahäkki on kenttäkoe kuinka häkkielämästä perinteiseen kanan elämään vapautetut kanat muuttuvat. Oletus on, että kanat kaunistuvat ja omaksuvat lajityypillisen käytöksen. Kanat on merkitty erivärisillä jalkarenkailla, jotta ne voidaan yksilöllisesti tunnistaa. Kanojen muuttumista seurataan kesän ajan valokuvaamalla niitä viikoittain. Kanat ovat saaneet seurakseen maatiaiskukon.” Lehtinen ja Suomi kertovat teoksestaan. Jukka Lehtisen ja Markon Suomen teos jatkaa heidän Mäntän kuvataideviikoille vuonna 2006 toteuttamansa eläinteoksen Pukki kaalimaan vartijana jäljillä, jossa kirjaimellisesti pukki vartioi sen oman aitauksen sisällä aidattua kaalimaata. Kaunistuksen kanahäkki on ajankohtainen ja kantaaottava kommentoiden tehotuotannossa olevien eläinten asemaa. Tarkoituksena on muuntaa eläinten olosuhteet paremmaksi ja saada muutoksia aikaan niiden ulkonäössä ja toiminnassa. Näyttelyn jälkeen Rauman taidemuseon pihapiirissä kesänsä viettäneet kanat saavat uuden hyvän kodin maaseudulta. |
Beautification Hen Cage by Jukka Lehtinen and
Marko Suomi comprises a traditional yard hen enclosure
with a coop, places for brooding and perches.
Five hens and a rooster have been chosen for its summer
residents. The hens are from an industrial poultry
farm specializing in effective production and have
been granted retirement as part of this artwork.
”Beautification Hen Cage is a field experiment
in how hens released from cramped caged life to a
traditional hen’s life change. The assumption is that
they will become more beautiful and adopt behaviour
typical of their species. The hens are marked with
different-coloured rings on their feet to be identified
individually. Their changes will be followed throughout
the summer by photographing them on a weekly basis.
The hens are accompanied by a rooster from the countryside,”
Lehtinen and Suomi describe their work.
Jukka Lehtinen’s and Marko Suomi’s biennial piece
carries on in the spirit of their animal-related work The
Goat Guarding the Cabbage Patch (Finnish equivalent
of ”the fox keeping the geese”) at the Mänttä Art Festival
in 2006, where a goat literally guarded a fenced
cabbage patch within its enclosure. Beautification
Hen Cage is a topical work commenting on animals
in industrialized farm production. Its purpose is to
improve the conditions of the animals and to bring
about changes in their appearance and behaviour. After
the exhibition, the hens of the Rauma Art Museum will
be given a new, good home in the countryside.
