| Teoksen tunnelmat vaihtuvat ilosta suruun. Lautasesta tulee maitoa valuva rinta, tuoliin kasvaa karvoitus ja naisen sukuelimet. Tapahtumapaikkana on lavaste tai pienoismalli, joka viittaa 1600-luvun anatomiseen leikkaussaliin. Animaation materiaaleina Suorajärvi on käyttänyt muovailuvahaa, lankoja, saksia, kahvikuppia, vanua ja muita arkisia materiaaleja. Suorajärvi viittaa teoksellaan lääketieteen historiaan ja anatomiaan, mutta myös, elokuvaohjaaja Peter Greenawayhin, jonka hovisäveltäjän Michael Nymanin musiikki soi animaation taustalla. Greenaway on puolestaan ammentanut elokuviinsa vaikutteita kuvataiteesta, erityisesti Rembrandtilta ja flaamilaisesta 1600-luvun maalaustaiteesta. Suorajärvi on työstänyt lääketieteen historiaa ja kuvastoja sivuavia teemoja myös aiemmissa teoksissaan, joihin on liittynyt esimerkiksi anatomisten kokovartalomuottien valmistaminen. Hän on myös kiinnostunut naiseuteen liittyvistä esitystavoista, myyteistä ja aihepiireistä. Suorajärvi on valmistunut kuvanveistäjäksi, mutta sitä aikaisemmin hän on opiskellut lääkäriksi ja toiminut ammatissa useita vuosia. Suorajärvi ei kerro tarinoita, tulkitse tai selitä teoksiaan. Taiteessaan hän tutkii hyvää ja pahaa omakohtaisten kokemusten kautta käyttämällä figuratiivista kuvastoa. Hänelle taide on tapa esittää ihmisruumista ja sen anatomisuutta suhteessa inhimillisiin tunteisiin. Ruumis on tunteiden näyttämö, jossa elämä ja kuolema kohtaavat. |
The moods of this work range from joy to grief. A
plate turns into a breast dripping milk; hairs and female
genitalia grow on a chair. The scene is a stage
set or a scale model alluding to a 17th-century anatomical
operating theatre. The materials of animation
are modelling wax, thread, scissors, a coffee cup, cotton
wool and other everyday materials.
With this work Suorajärvi makes reference not only
to anatomy and the history of medical science, but
also to the film director Peter Greenaway, with music
by Greenaway’s court composer Michael Nyman
playing in the background. In his films, Greenaway
has drawn upon influences from art, particularly from
Rembrandt and 17th-century Flemish painting.
Suorajärvi has worked with themes touching on
the history and imagery of medicine in earlier works,
which have included, for example, anatomical casts
of complete human bodies. She has also been interested
in representations, myths and themes associated
with femininity. Satu-Minna Suorajärvi was
trained as a sculptor, but before that she had graduated
in medicine and worked in the medical profession
for several years.
Suorajärvi does not tell stories or interpret or
explain her works. Her art explores good and evil
through personal experience by employing figurative
imagery. For her, art is a way of representing the
human body and its anatomical nature in relation to
human emotions. The body is a stage for emotions
where life and death meet.
